Celebratory Message

I am honored to be asked to write a message in celebration of the centenary of the registration of the Australian Mission in 1924. The vital work of the Mission in health care, education and pastoral care began in earlier decades and the photographs reproduced in this book bear witness to the hard work and determination of many people.
My family is proud of our connection to the Australian Mission in Korea, dating from the arrival of my great-grandfather Reverend Gelson Engel, his wife Clara and three children in 1900. My grandfather Max Wilfred (Bill) Engel was born in Busan in 1901. After Clara’s death in 1906, my great-grandfather married Agnes Brown who had been a missionary in Busan since 1895.
My father Reverend Richard Engel, who died last year at the age of 91, was honoured to visit Korea in 2000 and see the places where his grandfather had undertaken his life’s work for 38 years. I also have many fond memories of my own visit to Busan and Seoul in 2007.

축하의 글
호주선교회가 1924년 법인이 된 것을 축하하는 기념 화보집에 축하의 글을 쓰게 되어 영광으로 생각한다. 선교회는 그 전부터 의료, 교육 목회 등의 주요 활동을 하고 있었다. 본 도서에 담긴 사진들이 당시 그들의 환경과 헌신의 모습을 잘 증언하고 있다.
나의 가족이 그 호주선교회와 관련이 되어있어 자랑스럽게 생각한다. 1900년 나의 증조부인 엥겔과 그의 아내 클라라 그리고 3명의 자녀들이 한국에 도착하였다. 나의 조부인 맥스 윌프레드(빌) 엥겔은 1901년 부산에서 태어나셨다. 1906년 클라라의 죽음 이후, 엥겔은 1895년부터 호주선교사로 부산에 있던 아그네스 브라운과 결혼하였다.
나의 부친 리처드 엥겔 목사는 91세로 작년에 돌아가셨다. 그는 2000년에 한국을 방문할 기회를 가졌는바, 자신의 조부가 38년 동안 헌신한 곳을 볼 수 있었다. 나도 2007년 부산과 서울을 방문하였던 좋은 추억을 가지고 있다.
본 도서를 발행한 한호기독교선교회와 저자에게 축하를 전하며 건승을 빈다.
저자의 글
올해는 한국정부와 호주정부가 공식 수교한지 60주년이 되는 해이다. 한호영사협정은 1953년 시작되었지만, 1961년에 가서야 양국은 ‘정식 외교관계 수립에 관한 공동성명’을 발표하였다.
그 다음해 한국대사관이 시드니에 설립되었고, 호주대사관은 서울에 개관하였다. 한국과 호주의 공식 외교관계 성립은 한국전쟁 후 10여년의 노력 끝에 이렇게 결실을 맺었다.
그러나 한국과 호주의 민간 관계 역사는 130년이 넘었다. 헨리와 메리 데이비스라는 호주 빅토리아 주의 한 남매가 1889년 조선 땅에 발을 들여 놓은 이후, 목사, 의사, 간호사, 교육가, 복지사업가 등의 남녀선교사가 특히 부산과 경남지방에서 다양한 종류의 관계를 수립하였다. 한국에서 호주를 방문한 첫 남녀 유학생도 이 관계망을 통하여 입국하였던 것이다.
그 이후 한국과 호주의 관계는 나날이 발전하여 양국의 교역 확대는 계속되고 있다. 호주는 한국의 4번째로 큰 교역 파트너이자, 거대한 무역 시장이다.
130여 년 전부터 지금까지 민간외교의 기초를 놓았던 호주선교사들의 발자취가 본 화보집에 소개되었으며, 그분들의 사랑과 돌봄의 정신이 교회의 선교에서뿐만 아니라, 양국의 다중의 관계 속에서도 계속 이어지기를 희망한다.

From the Author
This year marks the 60 years of official diplomatic relationship between Australia and Korea. In 1953, the Korean Consulate was established in Sydney but the Embassy level relationship only came in 1961.
However, the history of civilian relationship traced back over 130 years. Since Henry and Mary Davies from Victoria, Australia arrived in the land of Korea in 1889, many Australian professional young people such as pastors, doctors, school teachers, welfare workers worked and related with Korean people especially in Busan and Kyungnam Province. The first Korean students who went to Australia were also from this mission network.
Since then, the diplomatic relationship between two nations has been developed and the trade relationship has been fully expended. To Korea, Australia is the 4th largest trade partner and a huge market.
In this book, the 130 years footstep of Australian missionaries in Korea is introduced, and I hope the spirit of their love and care for the poor continues in the various dimension of bi-polar relationship of the two nations.
