한국에서 활동한 호주선교사들의 공헌에 관한 연구를 훌륭하게 수행해 주신 양명득 목사님께 깊은 감사를 드립니다. 양명득 목사님은 이 주제에 대해 누구보다 해박한 지식을 가지고 계십니다. 참으로 이야기할 가치가 있는 선교이야기입니다. '한국의 호주선교사' 시리즈는 호주에서 한국으로 온 선교사들의 사역뿐 아니라, 더욱 중요한 것은 하나님께서 한국에서 역사하신 사역에 대한 증거이며, 이 사역에 함께한 호주선교사들이 있었음에 감사드립니다. 옛 동료 양명득 목사님, 진심으로 축하드립니다.
저는 양명득 목사님이 뉴사우스웨일스 주총회에서 다문화목회 총무로 재직하실 당시 함께 일할 수 있는 특권을 가졌습니다. 그 기간 양 목사님은 다문화 현장에서의 사역에 대한 신학적 성찰을 지원하고, 호주연합교회에서 사역하는 해외 출신 목회자들과 그들의 교회를 지도했으며, 다문화 사역 관련 서적과 자료를 편집하고, 반인종차별 워크숍을 개발했습니다. 양 목사님이 가진 에너지와 비전, 그리고 선교에 대해 깊이 있고 창의적으로 생각하는 능력을 직접 목격했습니다. 그는 하나님께서 우리에게 나아가라고 부르시는 새로운 방향을 분별하려 노력하는 와중에도 문화적, 영적 전통을 소중히 여기는 것이 중요하다고 강조했습니다.
존 브라운 목사님에 관한 이 책을 저는 매우 소중히 여깁니다. 젊은 목회 후보생 시절, 존 브라운 목사님이 세계선교부(후에 선교국) 책임자로 계실 때 저는 그분과 함께 현장 실습을 할 수 있는 행운을 누렸습니다. 그는 제게 시드니에 있는 ‘다문화 교회’들을 방문하고 관찰한 내용을 기록하는 임무를 주셨습니다. 당시 유성자 씨는 이 신생 사역을 지원하기 위해 총회 실무자로 있었습니다. 브라운 목사님과 유성자 씨는 제게 다문화 사역에 깊이 참여하는 것이 어떤 모습인지 그 본을 보여주셨습니다.
브라운 목사님의 격려로 저는 인도네시아에서 신학을 공부하며(1983-1984) 다문화 사역을 경험하였습니다. 어느 날 브라운 목사님이 자카르타를 방문하셨는데, 그분의 격려 말씀은 제게 큰 힘이 되었습니다. 브라운은 자신이 미처 깨닫지 못했을지도 모르지만, 여전히 저에게 멘토였습니다. 제가 호주로 돌아왔을 때 브라운과 유성자, 그리고 다른 분들이 1985년 총회에 제출될 성명서 ‘우리는 다문화 교회입니다’를 작성하는 데 적극적으로 참여하고 있었습니다. 브라운은 호주연합교회가 풍부한 문화적 다양성을 더욱 담대하게 포용하고 다문화 교회를 하나님의 선물로 여기도록 격려했습니다. 그는 또한 교회가 이러한 방향으로 나아가는 데 필요한 일들을 구체적으로 언급했습니다. 그는 인종차별을 명확히 규정하고, 소외된 자들과 함께하며, 원주민들의 이야기에 귀 기울이는 것의 중요성을 강력하게 설파했습니다.
브라운의 한국 선교 경험은 그를 크게 변화시켰고, 포용적인 교회를 향한 깊은 헌신으로 이어졌습니다.
양명득 목사님, 존과 노마 브라운이 한국에서 사역했던 시절을 조명해 주셔서 감사합니다. 이들의 한국인 사랑과 제2의 고향이 된 한국은 이들에게 그대로 남아 있으며, 이들의 삶은 우리의 국경을 넘어 모든 사람을 예외 없이 포용하는 하나님의 사랑과 은혜의 복음을 나누도록 초대하시는 선교의 하나님에 대한 증거입니다.

I wish to convey my deep appreciation to Rev. Dr. Myong Duk Yang on the outstanding work he has done researching the contribution of Australian missionaries who served in Korea. Myong knows more than anyone about this subject. Indeed it is a story worth telling. 'The Australian Missionary in Korea' series is a testimony not only to the ministry of those who came to Korea from Australia but even more importantly, to the work God has done in Korea and I give thanks that there have been Australian missionaries who played a part in this. To my former colleague, congratulations.
I had the privilege of working closely with Myong during the time he served in the Synod of NSW and ACT as Consultant for Cross-cultural ministry. During that time he supported theological reflection on ministry in multicultural settings, guided ministers coming from overseas serving in the Uniting church and their congregations, edited books and resources for cross-cultural ministry, and developed racism awareness workshops. I saw first-hand the energy and vision Myong brings and his capacity to think deeply and creatively about mission. He named the importance of valuing cultural and spiritual traditions even as we seek to discern the new directions God is calling us to take.
This book The Australian Missionary John and Norma Brown is a book I deeply treasure. As a young candidate for ministry I was fortunate to have a field placement with John Brown when he headed up the Commission for World Mission (later Commission for Mission). He gave me the task of visiting ‘Ethnic congregations’ in Sydney and reflecting on what I observed. At that time Ms Seongja Yoo was employed by the Assembly to help resource this burgeoning ministry. John and Seongja modelled for me what deep engagement in cross-cultural ministry looks like.
With John’s encouragement I embarked on my own experience of cross-cultural ministry, studying theology in Indonesia (1983-1984). On one occasion John visited Jakarta and his words of encouragement meant a great deal. John continued to be a mentor to me in ways he may not have realised. When I arrived back in Australia John and Seongja and others had been active drafting the Statement that went to the 1985 Assembly ‘We are a Multicultural Church’. John encouraged the Uniting church to more boldly embrace the rich diversity of cultures and see the multicultural church as God’s gift. John also named the work that was needed for the Uniting church to move in this direction. He powerfully articulated the importance of naming racism, being with Jesus on the margins, and listening carefully listen to First Nations people.
John’s missionary experience in Korea significantly shaped him in ways that led to a deep commitment to being an inclusive church.
Thank you Myong for shining light on the years that John and Norma served in Korea. Their abiding love for Korean people and the country which became their second home has remained with them and their lives are a testimony of the missionary God who invites us to cross borders to share the good news of God’s love and compassion that includes all people without exception.
