Dr Myong Duk Yang has published several books that tell the story of the long-standing and significant Korea-Australia relationship. His works give Koreans and Australians a better understanding of the 135 years of close people-to-people links between Korea and Australia. For nearly a year Dr Yang and I worked on a translation of The First Australian Missionary in Korea Henry Davies and His Nieces.
Working with Dr Yang was a spiritual revelation as he translated the text from English into Korean while preserving the Australian spirit. As we worked from one side of the West Pacific to the other it symbolised the spiritual linkage between five generations of Koreans and Australians. My family is Margaret’s family and, on behalf of our family I congratulate Dr Yang for his splendid research and writing in honour of our beloved Margaret.
On 1 March 2022 Moon Jae-in, President of the Republic of Korea, presented Aunty Margaret with a presidential citation and the Order of Merit of National Foundation (National Medal). In May 2024 Kang Jung-ai, Minister for Patriots and Veterans Affairs, sent me a memorial plaque honouring Aunty Margaret as one of Korea’s independence heroes. Margaret’s family, friends, school, university, and church appreciate that these honours were the result of Dr Yang’s work.
Both sides of Aunty Margaret’s family were missionaries. On Easter day 1890, her Uncle Henry Davies, caught in a snowstorm while looking for a site for his mission school, died of pneumonia in Busan.
In 1910, just as Japan colonised Korea, Aunty Margaret arrived in Busan, learnt the Korean language, and resumed her Uncle’s mission as school principal. Margaret refused to take her Korean girls to the Shinto Shrine to worship the Emperor of Japan. During Korea’s 1 March 1919 great independence uprising she was gaoled for protecting her schoolgirls demonstrating in the town centre. She fought fiercely for the Korean identity and language of her girls. When the treaty of Versailles did not free Korea, she restored hope in Koreans through her Christian Kingdom no one could take from them, her teaching of music no one could take from them, and her stand for Korean Independence. She had no idea that the impact of her devotion to the Korean people would inspire a legacy enduring beyond her lifetime.
Dr Yang’s new publication is a great book about a great life.

This book on Margaret S. Davies, PWMU missionary to Korea in the early 20th century, is the sixteenth book in Myong Duk Yang's series on Australian Missionaries in Korea. Dr Yang has done a great service to the people of Korea, and Australians of the twenty-first century, particularly in the Synod of Victoria and Tasmania of the Uniting Church in Australia, and the Presbyterian Church of Victoria. We are indebted to Dr Yang for his careful research of historical documents and gathering of photographic evidence to help us remember our common legacies and strengthen the relationship between Christians in Korea and Victoria.
We can praise God together for His work changing the lives of men and women, boys and girls for the better, and for their eternal good, through the efforts of Margaret Davies, her fellow workers and the thousands of Koreans who received the truth about God gladly, and entrusted their lives to the Lord Jesus Christ.
Miss Davies was the niece of the very first Australian missionary to Korea, Rev J. H. Davies, and served in Chinju and Busan. Her sister, Dr E. Jean Davies, also joined the missionary team, serving as a doctor. They served together for 30 years. I am thankful to learn more about the life and work of Margaret Davies, thanks to Dr Yang. Congratulations on completing yet another important book! Let's trust that members of the younger generation today will also be inspired to use their skills to reach out to others to share the love of Jesus.

호주장로교회와 호주연합교회의 한국 사랑은 특별합니다. 1889년 조선 땅에 선교사를 파송한 이래 127명의 호주인 선교사가 한국에서 헌신하였습니다. 그들이 일한 분야도 다양하여 목회, 교육, 의료, 복지, 노동 등 근대 한국 교회사에 적지 않은 공헌을 하였습니다. 그중에 부산과 경남 지역에서 그들이 보인 교육 활동은 눈물겹기까지 하며, 그 발자취가 지금까지 지속하고 있습니다.
그중 대표적인 교육 선교사가 마가렛 데이비스입니다. 그녀는 첫 호주선교사 헨리 데이비스의 조카로 30년 동안 한국에서 일하며 봉사하였습니다. 특히 그녀는 부산 동래에 동래일신여학교를 설립하고 교장으로 일하였습니다. 당시 한국의 미션스쿨은 일제하에 있으며 여러 가지 고초를 겪었는데, 동래일신여학교도 예외는 아니었습니다. 신사참배를 거부하면 폐교된다는 압박 속에 호주선교부는 결연히 결단하였습니다. “다른 영들에게 드리는 제단 앞에서 그리고 그 앞에서 일반적으로 행해지는 숭배 행위는 하나님의 명령을 불순종하는 것이기에, 우리는 그러한 참배를 할 수 없고 우리의 학교들에도 그렇게 하도록 지시할 수 없다.”
결국, 마가렛 데이비스 교장은 신사참배를 거부하고 사표를 내었고, 호주로 귀국하였습니다. 일제가 패망하고 해방된 후, 개명된 동래여자중고등학교는 나날이 발전하여 부산의 명문 학교가 되어 현재도 많은 여학생을 교육하고 있습니다.
본 저서의 편저자 양명득 선교사는 그동안 호주선교사 시리즈를 집필 발간하며 한국과 호주교회의 역사 발굴과 그 관계를 더욱더 가깝게 하고 있습니다. 그의 노력을 통하여 묻혀있던 선교사들의 편지와 보고서가 한국교회에 공개되고, 하나님이 행하신 역사를 알게 되니 그 작업은 가치 있다 하겠습니다.
아무쪼록 본 저서를 통하여 호주선교사들의 공헌이 한국 사회에 더 잘 알려지기를 바라며, 마가렛 데이비스의 하나님 사랑과 그분을 위한 헌신이 한국교회에 도전이 되기를 바랍니다.
