‘호주장로교회의 한국선교 1889-1941’은 1970년 호주선교사가 쓰고 호주장로교회에 의해 발간된 것으로 초기 한국선교 출발부터 식민지시기 동안의 선교 기록을 상세하게 정리하고 있다. 

경상남도 지역에서 활동한 호주장로회 선교사들에 관한 자료로, 그 당시 선교활동의 범위와 교육활동의 특징을 살펴보고 있는데, 한국선교 초기 기록이 매우 취약하고 단편적으로 남아 있는 현실을 비추어 볼 때 1941년 이전에 활동한 선교사들이 그들의 활동을 전체적으로 정리한 것은 상당히 의미 있는 일이라고 할 수 있다. 

경상남도를 중심으로 하여 각종 활동을 전개한 호주선교부에 대한 기록은 미국 주요 교파 및 서울과 평양 중심의 주류 역사 이면에서 잘 드러나지 않은 호주교회의 한국선교 활동과 경상남도 지역사를 이해하는데 중요한 기초자료로 남고 있다.

 

This book is published in 1970 by the former missionaries who worked in South Kyongsang Province of Korea during the latter part of the Japanese colonial period. In The Australian Presbyterian mission in Korea, 1889-1941, the authors provide a comprehensive account on the nature of their missionary work in Korea, featuring such aspects as the earlier history of the Protestant mission through the most controversial Japanese Shrine issue that divided the Christians in Korea during the 1930 and 1940s. 

Since the records of the earlier mission history are scarce and fragmented in nature, the book contributes significantly as it is written by the participants of the most active period of the missionary history of Korea. As the Australian mission represented the smaller group of missionaries who worked exclusively in the southern part of the country, this resource book may complement or, often, challenge the mainstream account of missionary history focusing mostly on the work of the American missionaries and those who worked in larger cities such as Seoul and Pyongyang.
