축하의 글 – 빛을 보게 된 귀중한 원문
맥켄지 가족에 관한 책을 집필한 양명득 목사님께 진심과 기쁨으로 축하드립니다. 맥켄지 가족은 한국 그리스도 선교 사역에 큰 공헌을 하였습니다. 나는 메리나 노블 맥켄지는 몰랐지만, 일신병원에서 이들의 딸인 헬렌과 캐시와 함께 일하며 그리고 선교 기록을 읽으며 알았습니다. 헬렌과 캐시가 스스로 말하기를 자신들이 의료선교사로 한국에 돌아온 주된 이유가 기본적인 의료 훈련만 받은 아버지가 나환자 마을의 거주자들을 돌보고, 어머니가 여성들에게 자녀 돌봄 가르치는 것을 보았기 때문이라 하였습니다.
헬렌과 캐시는 1952년 초 한국에 도착하였습니다. 전쟁으로 인하여 도시는 황폐하였고 병원 시작할 곳을 찾지 못하고 있었는데 부산진교회가 유치원 건물 사용을 제안하였습니다. 헬렌과 캐시는 이 교회에서 유아세례를 받았고, 온 가족이 이 교회에 출석했습니다. 부산진교회는 그 후 오랫동안 병원을 훌륭히 지원하였습니다.
이들의 부친인 노블 맥켄지가 어떤 사랑과 존경을 받았는지 한 이야기가 있습니다. 캐시가 은퇴한 몇 년 후 나와 함께 나병에 영향받은 사람들이 사는 소록도를 방문하였습니다. 우리는 그곳에서 걷다가 병으로 얼굴이 심하게 변형된 한 남성을 만났습니다. 캐시가 매 목사의 딸인 것을 듣더니 그의 얼굴에 기쁨이 솟았습니다. 그는 심지어 그녀의 부친이 지팡이를 짚고 걷는 모습을 정확히 흉내 내 우리를 즐겁게 하였습니다. 우리가 만난 또 한 남성은 다리가 생기기 전 영도로 부친을 태워주던 뱃사공이었습니다. 오랜 시간이 지났지만, 노블은 잊히지 않고 있었습니다.
나는 개인적으로 헬렌과 캐시의 의료 교육과 수많은 환자를 치료하는 모습을 직접 보았습니다. 이들과 이들 부모의 이야기가 이제 이 책을 통하여 많은 사람에게 읽히게 되어 기쁩니다. 그러나 이들이 가족과 선교회로 보낸 편지와 보고서가 없었다면 이들의 이야기는 쉽게 잊힐 수 있었습니다. 그 귀중한 원문이 양명득 목사님의 노력을 통하여 이제 빛을 보게 되었고 누구나 접할 수 있게 되었습니다. 그의 가치 있는 작업에 깊이 감사드립니다.

Congratulations! - Invaluable source of Information
It is with great sincerity and delight that I congratulate Rev Myong Duk Yang on his book on the Mackenzie family – a family that made such an invaluable contribution to the work of Christ in Korea.
I did not know either Mary or J Noble Mackenzie but learnt much of their story when I worked with their daughters, Helen and Catherine Mackenzie, at Il Sin Hospital and also from reading Mission records. Helen and Cath said that a major reason for their return as medical missionaries to Korea was seeing their father, who only had basic medical training, giving medical care to the residents of the leprosy village and their mother, giving advice to women about care of their children.
Helen and Cath arrived in Busan in early 1952. It was a city devastated by the war, no place to set up their hospital until Busanjin Church offered them the use of their kindergarten hall. A church in which they had been baptised as children, attended as a family and which continued to give great support over many years.
A short story to illustrate the love and respect in which J. Noble was held. A few years after retirement Cath visited Korea and we went to the island of Sorokdo where there is a village for those affected by leprosy. We were walking around when we met a man whose face was severely disfigured by leprosy, but when he heard that Cath was J. Noble, Mai Moksa’s daughter, his face was transfigured by joy and much to Cath’s delight he mimicked her father’s walk and use of cane with great accuracy. Then later we met the boatman who used to take J. Noble to Yongdo island at Busan before a bridge was built. Years had passed but J Noble was not forgotten.
I personally saw the results of Helen and Cath’s ministry in medical education and direct care of so many patients, and I am delighted that their story and that of their parents, Mary and J. Noble Mackenzie, can now be known to many though this book. Their story, however, could have been so easily lost without their letters and reports to family and Mission Board, an invaluable source of information that is now available to all through the hard work of Rev Yang. A work deeply appreciated and valued.
